Virus/ worm protection programs? November 30, 2008

I have Norton Antivirus 2008. I have found that this slows everything down as the program meticulously shifts through everything, in and out of my PC, but it also seems like a lot of internal things are much slower, too.
Is there a recommendation for a program to prevent virus/ worm/ et cetera attacks that does not sacrifice performance of the PC?
I have used AVG (the free version) now for 4-5 years and have had wonderful success. I use it on the desktop, laptop and pathetic netbook with no hits to performance.
Norton (like a lot of bloatware out there) tends to do too much, often with higher processor priorities than necessary.
