Artichokes seem highly overrated September 26, 2008

OK. I like almost every food, although liver and cantaloupe are way towards the bottom of the list. But I just do not get why some people are so crazy about artichokes. The flavor is OK, but the preparation and trouble of eating that little dab of edible stuff on the bottom of each leaf just seems overdoing it.

You even dab them in mayonnaise or hollandaise, so there’s not even the stand-alone taste that you get with asparagus tips or avocado meat. I do at least relate to fans of those two vegetables. But if I want to have artichoke, I will stick to the pickled hearts

they do seem like a big waste of effort. I imagine most people bother with it since they were raised with it.

I’m not a fan of them either. Too much work!
Cantaloupe, avocado and asparagus are pretty awesome, though. Then again, I like most fruits and vegetables.

Spinach and artichoke dip is about the most delicious thing ever. Aside from that I don’t see the point.

Yes, that is good stuff, but can you see the poor kitchen workers who have to scrape a reasonable amout off all of those petals to get enough? Artichokes actually have gone feral in places around here from former patches, I guess. Castroville, the world’s artichoke producing capital, is only about a hundred miles away.
