It is pink!

It is pink!

For those who think PAHs are not very pretty, I will say that you need to look at the right PAHs. This is tribenzo[de,kl,rst]pentaphene (which Clar trivially named terrylene). It is very vividly pink, with a bright green fluorescence. It is a fairly small PAH at eight rings and a molecular weight of 376.

When you add rings to each of the side faces of the middle naphthalene part, you get a green nine-ring PAH with orange fluorescence and a blue ten-ring PAH with red fluorescence.

Sounds gorgeous! And very brick-like.

It goes readily into DCM, pretty well in toluene if you use it warm first.
