Food dichotomies February 8, 2009

There are some foods that come in two main variations, each one very different than the other. This can be so much so that people have very strong opinions on them, sometimes to the point of loving one and hating the other. What do I mean?

Green olives versus black olives

Sweet pickles versus sour pickles (the relishes made from them)

Cling peaches versus freestone peaches

red wine versus white wine

Dry barbecue versus wet barbecue
Black tea versus green (or white) tea

A Southern one that is only local to that part of the US, boiled peanuts versus roasted peanuts

There probably are many more pairs, or even triplets or others groupings, of food that have these wide splits in characters.
