New air travel requirements coming soon June 8, 2009

I just read a notice that starting August 15th, the Transportation Safety Administration will require that airline reservations include the passenger’s full name as it appears on their proof-of-identity document (passport, valid driver’s license, or other accepted identification), their gender, and their date of birth.

These are meant to make the screening more thorough, so that watch lists do not just contain the name of the person. That was fraught with errors since only first and last names give more chances for misidentifications.

This change means that online bookings or those arranged by someone else will need more input. In time the webpages or questions asked will modify to accommodate these changes, but for the next few months there might be gaps. Default names using frequent-flier information ought to be updated to at least include the full name.

I have been debating whether taking along my passport on all flight, international and domestic, might be a good idea, too.
