Talking Turkey June 20, 2010

A lot of news lately about Turkey. The Gaza flotilla attack by Israel highlighted this. But a lot of clueless media types and politicians say that Turkey’s government is swinging away from Europe and the US and towards the Arab nations and Iran. Duh! This is not the secular type of government that Turkey has had for the past 90 years. It is a “moderate” Islamist party that espoused views away from Turkey’s secular traditions as a republic.

The secular governments thought that Westernization and modernization were what Turkey needed. Head scarves were banned in schools, just like what has happened in France. People were not expected to be devout Muslims nor pro-Palestinian or pro-Iranian. In fact, Iran was looked upon as a threat due to its support of Hezbollah in Lebanon, within what Turkey thougt of as their sphere of influence.

It is no different than people simplifying US attitudes and not accounting for the change from a conservative, bellicose George W. Bush administration and the more liberal, global-viewing Barack Obama administration.
